YouTube Thumbnail Preview

Judging a thumbnail on your full-screen monitor tells you nothing about how it looks in a crowded feed. Drop it in below to preview it in a desktop feed, a mobile feed, and Up Next, at their real relative sizes, with a grayscale contrast check and a real-size legibility test.

How to use the thumbnail preview tool

  1. Drop your thumbnail into the box above, or click to choose a file.
  2. Look at each feed view: desktop, mobile, and Up Next.
  3. Switch on the grayscale view to judge contrast without color.
  4. Use the real-size glance test, and look at it for two seconds.

The image is read in your browser and is never uploaded, so you can test as many versions as you like.

What to look for in each view

  • Desktop feed: does the thumbnail stand out from its neighbors? If it looks like the others, change the color or the subject.
  • Mobile feed: can you still read the text? This is the view where thin fonts and long phrases fail first.
  • Up Next: this is the smallest view. If the main subject is still clear here, the design is strong. If it turns to a smudge, simplify.
  • Grayscale: if you can't tell the subject or the words apart in black and white, your contrast depends on color alone.

Fixes for what the preview shows

  • Text unreadable: cut it to three or four words, use a heavy font, and add an outline. See how thumbnail text hurts CTR.
  • Subject too small: crop closer or scale the subject up so it fills more of the frame.
  • Blends into the feed: change the dominant color or the background. See thumbnail colors and contrast.
  • Key detail hidden: keep faces and words clear of the bottom-right corner, where YouTube shows the video length.

When to preview

Preview twice: once when you have a rough layout, so you can fix the big problems early, and once more on the final export, as your last check before you upload. A preview also helps when you choose between versions, so put them side by side and see which one you'd click.

A preview shows how your thumbnail looks, not how well it's designed. For a score and specific fixes, use the thumbnail rater, or run the full pre-upload check. Want the step-by-step version? Read our guide to the YouTube thumbnail preview routine.

Frequently asked questions

How can I see how my YouTube thumbnail will actually look?

Upload it to ThumbRoasty's free preview tool. It shows your thumbnail inside mockups of the desktop feed, the mobile feed, and the Up Next sidebar, at their real relative sizes, plus a shrunk-down glance test.

Why does my thumbnail look fine on my monitor but bad on YouTube?

Most viewers see a thumbnail at a fraction of the size you designed it at, on a screen you didn't test it on. A detail that reads clearly zoomed in on your editor can disappear at feed size. Preview it small before you publish, not after.

What does the grayscale toggle check?

It removes color so you can judge contrast on its own. If your subject or text is hard to make out in grayscale, it's relying on color contrast alone, which fails for some viewers and washes out on lower-quality screens.

What size is a thumbnail in the YouTube feed?

It depends on the device and layout, and YouTube changes it over time. That's why the tool shows several views at their real relative sizes instead of one fixed number. Judge your thumbnail at the smallest one.

Should I check my thumbnail on my phone too?

Yes. Open the preview on your phone if you can, because many viewers watch there and phone screens are where small text fails first.

Can I preview my title next to the thumbnail?

The feed mockups show your thumbnail in the same layouts viewers see. Read the thumbnail and title as a pair, and check that the words on the image add to the title instead of repeating it.

Is my thumbnail uploaded when I use this tool?

No. It's read by your browser and never sent to a server. For AI feedback on the design itself, use the ThumbRoasty analyzer on the home page.
