Safe zone

  • Keep faces and text inside the center 80% of the frame.
  • Keep the bottom-right corner clear. The video length sits there.

The full explanation, with a diagram, is in our YouTube thumbnail size guide.

Design rules

  • One clear focal point.
  • Three or four words of text, in a heavy font with an outline.
  • Strong contrast between the subject and the background.
  • Add to the title, don't repeat it.
  • Check it at postage-stamp size before you upload.
  • Only promise what the video delivers.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best YouTube thumbnail size?

Use a 16:9 image. 1280x720 pixels is the long-standing standard and still works. YouTube's Help Center now lists 3840x2160, with a minimum width of 640 pixels.

What is the file size limit for a YouTube thumbnail?

Up to 2 MB when uploading from the mobile app and up to 50 MB from a desktop computer, according to YouTube's Help Center.

What is the YouTube thumbnail safe zone?

The part of the frame least likely to be clipped or covered. Keep faces and text in the center 80% of the image and out of the bottom-right corner, where YouTube shows the video length.

Can I use this cheat sheet on my own site?

Yes. Use the embed code on this page. It includes a link back to ThumbRoasty, which is all we ask for.
