Your Thumbnail Could Not Be Edited on YouTube? 7 Fixes

Sharefinr

You upload a new image, press save, and YouTube says your thumbnail could not be edited. The message doesn't say why, which is the frustrating part. YouTube doesn't publish a page for this exact wording, but the causes people report match the platform's rules, and there are only a handful of them. Work through the list below from the top and you'll usually find it in a few minutes.

First, note where the thumbnail could not be edited error appears

The fix depends on the situation, so start with these three questions.

  • Is it a regular video or a Short? Shorts have different rules, covered in cause 2.
  • Are you on the phone app or a computer? Some options only work in Studio on a computer.
  • Did it ever work before on this channel? If yes, suspect a temporary glitch or a new restriction. If no, suspect verification or the file.

Cause 1: your channel isn't verified

Custom thumbnails need a verified account, and verification uses a phone number. If your channel isn't verified, YouTube blocks the upload. Verify the channel, sign out and back in, and reload YouTube Studio before you try again. Our guide on what to do when you can't upload a custom thumbnail walks through it step by step.

Cause 2: you're editing a Short

A Short usually can't take an uploaded image from the phone app. Custom Short thumbnails come from Studio in a desktop browser, and not every channel has them yet. In the app you choose a frame. If you're trying to upload an image to a Short from the app, that's likely why it fails. See our YouTube Shorts thumbnail guide for what's available and where.

Cause 3: the file breaks a rule

A file can be rejected because of its format, its shape, or its size.

  • Format: use JPG or PNG.
  • Size: up to 2 MB from the mobile app and up to 50 MB from a computer, per YouTube's Help Center.
  • Shape and width: 16:9, at least 640 pixels wide.

Run the file through our thumbnail size checker and it will tell you which of the limits it misses. If the file is over 2 MB, upload it from a computer or export it again at a lower quality.

Cause 4: the video is still processing

If you try to change the thumbnail while the video is still uploading or processing, the edit can fail. Wait until the video shows as fully processed in Studio, then try again.

Cause 5: a policy or channel restriction

YouTube can refuse a thumbnail that breaks its Thumbnails policy, such as sexual, graphic, or misleading images. Channels with active strikes or restrictions can also lose access to some features. Look for warnings in Studio under channel status and features. You can read the official rules on YouTube's Thumbnails policy page, and our guide on thumbnail mistakes that risk your channel explains the common traps.

Cause 6: you don't have the right access

If you manage a channel that someone else owns, some options depend on your role. Ask the owner to check your permissions, or to upload the thumbnail themselves.

Cause 7: a temporary glitch

If your thumbnail could not be edited for none of the reasons above, try the boring fixes in order:

  1. Reload Studio, or use a private browsing window.
  2. Try a different browser.
  3. Clear the browser cache, or update the app if you're on a phone.
  4. Turn off browser extensions for a minute.
  5. Give it an hour, then retry.

Quick list: when a thumbnail could not be edited

  1. Verified by phone number? If not, verify.
  2. Is it a Short? Use Studio on a computer, or pick a frame.
  3. Is the file JPG or PNG, 16:9, and under the size limit?
  4. Has the video finished processing?
  5. Any warnings on the channel?
  6. Do you have the right role?
  7. Still stuck? Try another browser or device.

If it saves but doesn't show

Sometimes the edit works and the old image still appears. That's a caching or timing problem, not an edit error. See why a YouTube thumbnail is not changing, including how long it usually takes.

Frequently asked questions

What does "your thumbnail could not be edited" mean on YouTube?

It means the save failed, but YouTube doesn't say why. The usual reasons are an unverified channel, a file that breaks the rules, editing a Short in the wrong place, or a temporary glitch.

Why can't I change my Shorts thumbnail?

A Short's custom image comes from Studio in a desktop browser, and some channels don't have that option yet. In the mobile app you can pick a frame instead.

Can a large file cause this error?

Yes. The limit is 2 MB from the mobile app and 50 MB from a computer, so try uploading from a computer or exporting a smaller file.

Will the thumbnail could not be edited error go away on its own?

If it was a glitch or a processing delay, yes. If it's verification or a file problem, it will keep happening until you fix the cause.
