You uploaded a new thumbnail, saved it, and the old one is still there. Or it looks right in YouTube Studio but wrong everywhere else. A YouTube thumbnail not changing is usually a timing or caching issue, and it's rarely permanent. Here's how to tell which one you have and what to do about it.
How long does it take for a YouTube thumbnail to change?
Usually a few minutes, and often within a couple of hours. In some places, such as Google search results or shared link previews, it can take longer, sometimes up to a day. The new image should show in YouTube Studio straight away. If it doesn't, the save didn't go through, so start with step 1.
Step 1: confirm it actually saved
Start in YouTube Studio, because it's the source of truth.
- Open Studio and go to Content.
- Click the video and look at the Thumbnail section.
- Check that your new image is shown there and that the Save button was pressed. If Save is still active, the change hasn't been stored yet.
If the old image is still in Studio, the upload failed. Try a different file, or read what to do when you can't upload a custom thumbnail. If you see an error message, read the fixes for "your thumbnail could not be edited".
Step 2: give it a little time
A new thumbnail doesn't always appear everywhere at once. YouTube's servers, apps, and search results may update at slightly different times. Most cases of a YouTube thumbnail not changing are just waiting. It can take a few minutes, and sometimes longer, for the change to spread to all the places your video shows up.
Step 3: check the place you're looking
A YouTube thumbnail not changing in one place doesn't mean it failed everywhere.
Where you see the old image changes the cause.
- Your own browser or app: a cached copy on your device. Refresh the page hard, or open the video in a private window.
- Google search results: Google keeps its own copy of the video's image and refreshes it on its own schedule. You can't force it, but it updates over time.
- WhatsApp, Facebook, X, or Discord previews: those apps saved the old preview. See our guide to link previews with a missing thumbnail for how to refresh them.
- An embed on a website: the site may be caching the old image. A page cache or CDN clear usually solves it.
Step 4: check whether a test is running
If your channel has access to YouTube's Test & Compare feature and a test is active on that video, the thumbnails you see may rotate between versions. Check the video's test status in Studio before you assume the change failed. See our guide to A/B testing YouTube thumbnails for how those tests work.
Step 5: check that you edited the right video
It sounds obvious, but if you have similar videos, a re-upload, or a duplicate, it's easy to update the wrong one. Confirm the video title and ID in Studio match the link you're checking.
Step 6: try a clean re-upload
- In Studio, remove the current custom thumbnail if the option is available.
- Save the video.
- Upload the new thumbnail again, from a computer, over a stable connection.
- Save and reload Studio.
Use a fresh file name so no system mistakes it for the old file.
YouTube thumbnail not changing: common causes at a glance
- Saved but not spread yet: wait and refresh.
- Never saved: re-upload and press Save.
- Old image in a social app: refresh the preview cache.
- Old image in Google search: wait for Google to recrawl.
- Test running: check Test & Compare.
- Wrong video edited: confirm the ID.
How to tell if the new thumbnail worked
Once the change is live everywhere, measure it. Note your click-through rate before, wait until you have enough impressions, and compare like with like. Our guide on how to check your YouTube thumbnail CTR shows where to find it in YouTube Studio.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take for a new YouTube thumbnail to show?
Often a few minutes, but it can take longer in some places, such as search results or social previews. Studio should show it right away.
Why is my YouTube thumbnail not changing in search results?
Google keeps its own copy and refreshes it on its own schedule, so search can lag behind YouTube by a while.
Why does my new thumbnail show in Studio but not on YouTube?
It's usually a cache or timing delay. Refresh in a private window and check again after a while.
Can I force Google to update the thumbnail in search results?
Not directly. Google refreshes its copy over time, and the update usually follows once it recrawls the page.
Does changing a thumbnail reset my video's views?
No. Changing the image doesn't remove views, comments, or history. Read more in how to change a YouTube thumbnail.
