You paste a YouTube link into WhatsApp, Facebook, or Discord and the preview shows a gray box, a tiny logo, or nothing at all. It's annoying, especially if you're sharing your own video. Most of the time a YouTube thumbnail not showing in a link preview comes down to one of a handful of causes, and each has a quick fix.
Why a YouTube thumbnail not showing is usually not a YouTube problem
When you share a link, the app you're sharing to visits the page, reads a small piece of hidden information (the preview image, title, and description), and builds the card you see. YouTube provides that information. The app fetches it, stores a copy, and shows the copy. So when the thumbnail is missing, either the app couldn't fetch the data, or it stored an old or empty version.
Quick checks before anything else
- Open the link in a private browser window. If the video needs you to sign in, the sharing app can't see it either.
- Check the video's visibility. Private videos never generate a preview. Unlisted videos usually do. Age-restricted videos and videos limited to members often don't.
- Check that the video has finished processing. A brand-new upload may not have a final thumbnail yet.
- Look at the link itself. A shortened link, or one with a long tracking tail, can break the preview. Use the plain youtube.com/watch?v= or youtu.be/ version.
Cause 1: the video is brand new
Right after upload, YouTube may still be processing the video and its thumbnail. If you share the link at that moment, the app can save an empty preview. Wait until the video shows as fully processed in YouTube Studio, then share again with a small change to the link (see below).
Cause 2: the app cached an old preview
Facebook, WhatsApp, X, Discord, and LinkedIn all keep a saved copy of link previews. If the first attempt failed, the failed version can stick around.
- Facebook and Instagram-related previews: use Meta's Sharing Debugger. Paste the link, press Debug, then press Scrape Again to force a fresh fetch.
- WhatsApp: previews are often cached on your own phone as well. Add a harmless extra bit to the end of the link, such as ?feature=share after the video ID (or &feature=share if the link already has a question mark), and send it again.
- Discord and others: delete the message, wait a few minutes, and post the link again with a small change.
Cause 3: the video's settings block previews
Some settings stop outside apps from reading the page:
- The video is private, scheduled, or a members-only upload.
- The video is marked as made for kids or restricted by age, which can limit what outside apps can show.
- The video was taken down or is region-restricted in the place where the app is fetching it.
Switch the video to public or unlisted temporarily if you need the preview to work, then change it back once you've shared it.
Cause 4: the thumbnail itself is the problem
Sometimes the thumbnail is missing from the video, not just from the preview.
- If you uploaded a custom thumbnail that failed to save, YouTube may show a blank or auto-picked frame. Open YouTube Studio, select the video, and check the Thumbnail section.
- If the file is over the size limit or in the wrong format, the upload can be rejected. Run it through our thumbnail size checker to confirm the format, size, and ratio.
Cause 5: it's the app, not the link
If the same link previews fine in one app and fails in another, the problem is on the failing app's side. Try these in order:
- Force-close the app and reopen it.
- Update the app to the latest version.
- Check your internet connection. Previews need the app to fetch the page over a working connection.
- Try sending the link to a different chat to see if it's a one-chat glitch.
What if you run a website and YouTube embeds don't show a thumbnail?
That's a different problem from a YouTube thumbnail not showing in a shared link. On your own site, the preview image comes from your page's own social tags, not from YouTube. Make sure the page has an image tag for social sharing and that the image is large enough (1200 by 630 pixels is a safe size).
A simple prevention routine
The best way to avoid a YouTube thumbnail not showing is to get the basics right before you share.
- Set the thumbnail before you publish, not after.
- Wait for processing to finish before you share.
- Share the plain link, without tracking parameters.
- Check the preview yourself in a private chat first.
While you're at it, make sure the thumbnail people do see is worth clicking. Our 7-point checklist to rate a YouTube thumbnail takes about two minutes.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my YouTube thumbnail not showing on WhatsApp?
Usually the app cached an empty preview, or the video was still processing when you first shared it. Add a small extra parameter to the link, restart the app, and try again.
Why is my YouTube thumbnail not showing on Facebook?
Facebook saves a copy of link data. Use the Sharing Debugger to scrape the link again and refresh what Facebook stores.
Do unlisted videos show a thumbnail in link previews?
Often yes, but it can vary by app. Private videos never show one.
Can a low-quality thumbnail affect the preview?
Yes, a blurry or badly cropped thumbnail looks worse in a preview too. See why a YouTube thumbnail looks blurry and how to fix it.
Once the preview works, check how your thumbnail reads in a feed with the thumbnail preview tool, or get a free score before you share the video widely.
