How to Change a YouTube Thumbnail (and When You Should)

You can change a YouTube thumbnail on a video at any time, even years after it went live, and the video keeps its views, comments and history. The harder question is whether you should. Swapping a thumbnail can lift a video that's being ignored, but done carelessly it teaches you nothing. This guide covers the exact steps, the signs that a change is worth trying, and how to tell whether it worked.

How to change a YouTube thumbnail in YouTube Studio

  1. Open YouTube Studio and select Content from the left menu.
  2. Click the video you want to edit.
  3. Under Thumbnail, choose Upload file and pick the new image.
  4. Click Save.

On your phone? See how to change a YouTube thumbnail on your phone. You can also do this after upload at any time, and the video keeps its views. The new image can take a little while to appear everywhere. If the upload option is missing, your channel may need to be verified first. Before uploading, confirm the file meets the size and format limits in our YouTube thumbnail size guide, or drop it into the free thumbnail size checker.

When a new thumbnail is worth trying

  • Plenty of impressions, few clicks. If YouTube shows the video often but few people click, the thumbnail or title is the likely weak point.
  • The design is clearly dated. Old videos with small, cluttered or low-quality images stand out badly next to newer ones.
  • The promise changed. If you updated the video's content, the image should match.
  • It fails at small size. Unreadable text is a fixable problem. See common thumbnail mistakes.

If the video has very few impressions, the problem is more likely discovery than the thumbnail, and a new image won't help much on its own.

When to leave it alone

Before you swap the image on a video that already performs well for its topic, ask what you expect to gain. Without a reason, it's a gamble. Also avoid changing several things at once. If you swap the thumbnail, title and description in one go, you'll never know which one made the difference.

How to tell whether the change worked

  1. Note the starting point. In YouTube Studio analytics, write down the impressions click-through rate over a recent period before you change anything.
  2. Change one thing. Replace only the thumbnail so the comparison stays clean.
  3. Wait for enough data. Give it several days, or longer for videos with few impressions, so you aren't reacting to noise.
  4. Compare like with like. Look at the same length of time before and after, and account for anything unusual such as a spike from a share.

For a more controlled comparison, YouTube's built-in thumbnail testing lets viewers split between versions. We explain it in our guide to A/B testing YouTube thumbnails.

What to change in the new thumbnail

Make the new version clearly different, not slightly tweaked. Common levers are a stronger focal point, larger and shorter text, higher contrast, or a different emotion. If you're unsure what is weak, score the old one first with our thumbnail rating checklist or run it through the ThumbRoasty analyzer and fix the lowest-scoring area. If clicks are low across many videos, start with why your thumbnail isn't getting clicks.

Frequently asked questions

Can you change a YouTube thumbnail after uploading?

Yes. In YouTube Studio open Content, select the video, and upload a new file under Thumbnail. You can do this at any time.

Does it hurt a video to change a YouTube thumbnail?

Changing the image doesn't remove the video's views, comments or watch history. Whether the new version performs better depends on the design, which is why it's worth measuring the result.

How long does a new thumbnail take to show up?

Usually a short while after you save. If it still looks unchanged, refresh and check again later, since it can take time to update across all places it appears.

How often should I change a thumbnail?

Only when you have a reason, such as low click-through with healthy impressions. Changing one thing at a time and waiting for enough data keeps the results meaningful.
