How many thumbnails should you make for one video? Making one is a gamble, and making twenty burns a day you could spend on the next video. The sweet spot is small: three different ideas, one polished result.
One thumbnail is a default, not a decision
If you make a single thumbnail, you never chose it. You took the first idea you had. Even a rough second option changes that, as long as it's different in a way viewers would notice: a new subject, a different crop, or a different feeling. A slightly different color doesn't count.
Why returns drop off quickly
Going from one idea to three or four gives you the biggest jump in quality, because you have to think differently each time. After that, new versions tend to be small variations of ideas you already had. That time is better spent improving your strongest concept. So the answer to how many thumbnails to make is usually three or four.
A workable routine: three concepts, one finished
- Sketch three different ideas in ten minutes. Rough boxes and a few words are enough. Change the subject, the emotion, or the main text each time.
- Pick one. Go with your gut reaction, then check it against the basics: is there one clear focal point, can you read the text at small size, and does it make you curious?
- Spend the rest of your time on that one. Clean up the cut-out, fix the contrast, and simplify anything crowded.
- Save the other two. They're useful for testing, or for a later video on the same topic.
What makes two thumbnails "different"
Real variety means changing at least one big choice:
- The subject: your face, an object, a screenshot, or a before-and-after.
- The emotion: surprise, worry, pride, or calm.
- The text angle: a number, a question, or a bold claim.
- The layout: subject on the left, subject in the center, or a split frame.
You can't judge your own thumbnail cold
You know what the video contains, so you can't see the thumbnail the way a new viewer does. Show your favorite to someone who hasn't seen the video and ask what they think it's about. If their answer is off, fix it before you publish. If no one is around, run it through an AI thumbnail check for a quick outside view.
How many thumbnails to make for a big video
There are good reasons to go higher: a video you expect to be a big one for your channel, an old video you're relaunching, or a topic where you're unsure what your audience wants. In those cases, plan to test the options instead of just picking one. Our guide to A/B testing YouTube thumbnails explains how.
Frequently asked questions
How many thumbnails should I design per video?
Three distinct concepts is a good target. Finish the strongest one, and keep the others in case you want to test or swap later.
Can I upload more than one thumbnail to YouTube?
YouTube Studio has a Test & Compare feature that lets eligible channels test several thumbnails on one video. It isn't available to everyone, so check your own Studio account.
Is it worth making a new thumbnail for old videos?
Often, yes. An older video that already gets impressions but few clicks is a low-effort place to improve results. See how to change a YouTube thumbnail and judge whether it worked.
