Podcasts on YouTube are watched in the same feed as everything else, so the image does a lot of the work. A good episode can get scrolled past if the picture looks like a screenshot of two people at desks. This guide covers how YouTube podcast thumbnails work, the sizes to use, and the layouts and text that make an episode look worth clicking.
Two kinds of podcast thumbnails, two jobs
A podcast on YouTube usually has two kinds of image.
- The episode thumbnail: the 16:9 image for each video, like any other YouTube video.
- The podcast or playlist image: the cover for the show as a whole. YouTube's podcast pages describe this as a square image, and guides commonly cite 1280 by 1280 pixels. Check YouTube's current help page for the exact size, because it can change.
Most of your clicks come from episode thumbnails, so that's where design effort pays off.
Sizes for the episode thumbnail
Use the same rules as any video: 16:9, JPG or PNG, at least 640 pixels wide, with 1280 by 720 a safe standard. File limits are 2 MB from the mobile app and 50 MB from a computer. Our YouTube thumbnail size guide has all the numbers, and the size checker tests your file.
What makes podcast thumbnails work
Show the guest, not just the room
A clear photo of the guest, or of the two people in conversation, is the strongest starting point. Viewers decide quickly whether a name or face interests them.
Put one idea in words
Use three or four words that state the hook of the episode, such as a claim, a question, or a number. "WHY I QUIT" works better than the full episode title. Don't repeat the title, since it sits next to the thumbnail.
Keep a template, change the content
Recurring shows benefit from a look people recognize: the same colors, font, and logo spot every episode. Change the guest photo and the hook each time. See thumbnail consistency for a series for how to lock the right parts.
Make faces large and readable
Podcast frames often show people at a distance. Crop in tight, brighten the face, and cut out the background if you can. Small faces disappear in the feed.
Layouts that suit podcast thumbnails
- Guest on one side, text on the other: the simplest and most reliable layout.
- Split frame for two people: host on one half and guest on the other, good for debates and interviews.
- Close-up with a quote: a large face with one short line of the most surprising thing said.
- Topic image with a small host photo: for topic-led shows where the subject matters more than the person.
More on placement is in our guide to thumbnail composition layouts.
Common mistakes
- Using a wide screenshot of the recording. Faces are too small to read in the feed.
- Too much text. Guest name, episode number, and a long title turn to clutter. Choose one.
- Weak contrast. Dark studios can make the whole thumbnail muddy. Brighten the subject and separate it from the background.
- Misleading quotes. Only use a line the guest actually said, in context. See thumbnail text without clickbait.
A quick podcast thumbnail checklist
- Is the guest's face large and clear?
- Is the text three or four words?
- Does it stay readable at postage-stamp size?
- Does it look like the rest of the show, without being identical?
- Does the episode deliver what the thumbnail suggests?

Frequently asked questions
What size should a podcast thumbnail be on YouTube?
Episodes use a 16:9 thumbnail, with 1280 by 720 pixels as a safe choice. The podcast's cover image is usually a square. Check YouTube's current help page for the exact size.
Should I put the host's face on every episode?
Not necessarily. The guest's face is often a stronger hook. Keep the host in a consistent, smaller spot if you want recognition.
Can I use the same thumbnail for every episode?
Avoid it. Use one template but change the guest and the hook, so viewers can tell episodes apart.
How much text should podcast thumbnails have?
Three or four words. The title already carries the detail.
